Before the Bridge

Many of the ocean front coastal destinations in the South are located on barrier islands. These islands have sandy beaches and ocean waves on one side and protected bay fronts on the other. They provide the picture perfect ocean view getaway. To get to these islands there is most often a bridge of some sort. It may be a new, towering, sleek panoramic entry way to paradise. Or sometimes it is an old, low rustic entrance into a sleepy hideaway. Either way, the bridge has a before and after.

Before the bridge are often gas stations, markets, bait shops and stores where eager visitors stock up on all the items they will need for their beach weekend. However, for the savvy traveler who takes the time to notice, these towns before the bridge are often just as interesting and enjoyable as the beach front destinations they support.

Local Eats – The people who live and work in these communities know the best places to find whatever it is you’re looking for. Oftentimes the little, out-of-the-way restaurants are where you can find the best seafood. Sure it’s nice to sit in a fancy place with an ocean view but many times, the same food is served for a better price in the local eateries.

Arts & Crafts – Though beach-side communities have similar styles (think shell art & jewelry and floral patterns) often each area has at least a few things that are unique. The artists and artisans who make these items are likely to live in the towns before the bridge. Taking the time to peruse the local shops can yield some fabulous and one-of-a-kind finds.

History & Museums – Long before the idea of beach-front cottages and condos, people earned a living off the sea. The barrier islands were just that – protection against the ocean storms. So the harbor towns were founded and built up over time and offer a glimpse into our nation’s past.

As a traveler, I have done it both ways. I have been in the car with the windows up, AC full blast and jumping out just long enough to stock the cooler and then speed off over the bridge to hit the beach. I have also spent some relaxing, lazy afternoons investigating the hidden gems that can be found in these small communities.
